Anchoring
A switch for your desired state...
What is an Anchor?
An Anchor is a connection/link between a specific and intense state of mind and a specific source of physical stimuli/trigger (touch, visual, auditory etc.).
For example, I am sure that you have a song that reminds you vividly of a specific event in your life, perhaps a holiday, a kiss, a party etc. Well, that’s an Anchor. Perhaps you have heard someone say “I can stay there, it reminds me of...”; that is one example of an anchor, a set of feelings linked to a specific place.
How can you use Anchors to make positive changes and or achieve your goals?
Whenever you are in an associated (see through your own eyes – feel the feelings) state, at the peak of that state, apply a specific stimulus (pressure on a specific body part) and the state will be linked to that body part.
The “Technique”
Recall a specific event, an experience (recalled or constructed) where you felt a certain way (desired outcome).
Apply a specific stimulus at the peak of that “re-experience” and hold for 5 seconds.
Note: During the elicitation of the experience, you need to make sure that all the elements, visual, auditory and kinaesthetic, are recalled or constructed as vividly as possible. Close your eyes, imagine/remember the experience as if you were day-dreaming and then, “Anchor” the feelings.
Test the Anchor
Key factors
- Intensity of the recalled experience
- Timing
- Specific Anchored part
- Replication of the stimulus
- Number of times
