“Chunking Up” means referring to a larger category of which the subject in discussion is part of. For example, cars are an example of vehicles; vehicles are an example of transportation.  Bananas are example or fruit and fruit is an example of vegetarian foods which are an example of food and food is an example of comestible products.  What is the purpose of this, what could “Chunking Up” be useful for? Well, it is a great way to establish the basis for change and is a great tool which can be used to reach agreement in difficult situations.

For example, you may or may not like bananas; and if you do not like bananas we may disagree that bananas taste good. However, it is less likely that we would disagree when talking about fruit in general, even less likely that we disagree when we talk about vegetarian food and it is almost impossible not to agree that food is good when we talk about food in general. “Chunking Down” is the exact opposite.

Okay, what is the purpose of this in real life? Well, have you ever heard a friend saying things like: “Nothing goes right! Everything sucks!” or “Nothing ever goes my way!” etc. Applying the right “chunking techniques” when dealing with these kinds of moods can have a “miraculous” positive effect on the person who is complaining.

For example, a while ago, I was enjoying a peaceful Sunday afternoon in my garden, entertained by a great sunshine, a few friends around and a cool beer in my hand.

Just as I took the first sip of that cool beer my phone rang and the screen read the name of a friend of mine which we will call Andrew (not his real name). Right away I thought that this could have been an invite to a bbq or a request to come over to mine and enjoy the wonderful day with friends.

To destroy this fantastic expectation of mine, I found a rather unpleasantly toned voice saying something along these lines:

A:“Everything is c**p!! I don’t understand how these things always happen to me!”  so I say “hohoho, slow your horses down Andrew! What’s wrong?”
To which the answer was “EVERYTHING! Everything just sucks!”

At this point I could have said something like “well, come on, everything will be alright, you know...” but this would have probably made it even worse. Why? Well, by saying “Everything will be alright soon” I would have implicitly agreed (presupposition) that EVERYTHING was wrong in the first place.

This would have meant “I know, you are right, EVERYTHING is c**p, but it will not be crap all the time; or will it?” Using the chunking process appropriately you can really make the difference in someone’s mood and therefore improving their day as well as preserving the well deserved happiness and tranquillity of your own. Here’s how I did it that time.

I said: “EVERYTHING??????” sounding incredibly surprised. That’s it, that’s what made that massive difference in his day as well as mine and my family’s day.

By acting so surprised and asking the question, I made Andrew think and then I continued “What specifically is crap?” and he said “Well, I went to work and...” so I chipped in and said “ho I see... so it’s a work thing isn’t it?” to which Andrew said “Yes, yes it’s a work thing, you see I went there and the computer crashed and lost all...” me, chipping in again “I see... the computer eh?” “Yes.

Yes the computer. It just crashed on me as I was literally finished with that 5000 word project I was working on and now I lost it all!. Now I will have to redo the whole conclusion of the presentation which means that I will have to work at least 10 extra hours next week!” Me: “Oh no!! What a shame!!! Wow, it’s a good thing that you saved the rest of the presentation, or else you would have had to work 100 extra hours, but that’s saved isn’t it?” “Yes it is”, Me: “Great, so, that knowledge you now have to save a project every 300 words will help you in the future, will it not? I wonder whether you would like to come for a cold beer at my place and let go of work until Monday? Would you like to come for a beer or shall with put a bbq together?”

So we began by having a situation where EVERYTHING was wrong. In his mind, really EVERYTHING was wrong. From EVERYTHING, we went down to WORK being the wrong bit, from there we took Andrew to isolate the wrong part of everything to the computer, then down to 10 extra hours work. Now, would you agree that there is a massive difference between EVERYTHING and an extra 10 hours work? I though you would.

Start right now; first make a list of your problems as they appear now and then chunk down or up as appropriate.

To your success!
