The World Cup Anxiety Disorder???
A new form of anxiety or just a myth?

The followoing is take from the original press release published in April 2010.

FootBall
Cambridge, 8th April 2010:Cambridge Hypnotherapist Luca Senatore has beeninundated with requests to help clients overcome what seemsto be a brand new phobia.

Dubbed “ World Cup Anxiety “ the new phobia appears to be increasing at an alarming rate with requests for support coming from all over the UK.
Symptoms of “world cup anxiety” include

  • Lack of concentration at work in the 24 hour period preceding a big game
  • A slightly increased resting heart rate for the period of the tournament
  • Heightened emotional state and an impaired ability to deal rationally with common crisis
  • Implications of the above symptoms can lead to further complications including problems with relationships and communication within the workplace or home

Commenting on the alarming increase in the new phobia Luca Senatore, who specialises in weight related issues and phobias, commented “What we are seeing now is a phenomenon that has been manifesting itself in the minds of football fans for decades, it now appears to have built up strength almost like a pseudo virus to the point at which people are experiencing physical symptoms.  The appearance of a new phobia is always fascinating as each case I am seeing at the moment is also a different variation of the problem

Mr Senatore and his Cambridge based Hypnotherapy practice have launched a tailor made phobia package aimed at solving these issues for any fan that feels they might be suffering already from world cup anxiety, “ It will normally only take me a couple of hours to achieve a complete cure of world cup anxiety in my clients, after treatment my clients would be able to sit through a world cup final penalty shootout between England and Brazil without a noticeable rise in heart BPM throughout

Hypnotherapy For Weight Loss?
Something About “Mary”

Losing weight can be a challenging task, wanting to lose it and failing is measuredevastating. Part of our mind seems to always find excuses to have that “last” snack, that “last” piece of chocolate, that “last” naughty bit; doesn’t it? Here is a case history that shows exactly how hypnotherapy can make a massive difference for people wanting to lose weight.

I have worked with a lovely lady who was determined to lose weight, we will call her Mary here (not her real name). She is 64 and she had to lose 7 stone. I can hear you going “whhhhhhat??!!” This was actually not an issue for me, nor was it for her as she was realistic with regards to the time that it would take to reach that goal.

The challenging part was that apart from being 64 years old, as not all people are motivated to do exercise at that age, a few years before she came to visit me in clinic, she had a heart transplant and before then she went through chemotherapy.

These factors combined were more than enough to suggest that during the hypnotherapy sessions I would not have needed to do any work on motivation to exercise whatsoever.

So, all I had left was to “reprogram” her mind to dislike some of the “bad” food she was eating, erase and replace the emotional eating triggers which started after her son passed away in a car accident, replace the habit of snacking with healthier and more rewarding behaviours and slightly accelerate her metabolism so to burn more calories.

This was a challenging client for me. I have worked with many people with issues such as phobias, stress, anxiety and addictions. The list is endless, yet this was one of my most challenging.

I have stretched the session to 2 hours (normally sessions are 75 minutes tops) and done all I could to help Mary achieve her goal. Losing weight would have meant so much more than looking better and feeling healthier. It would have meant that Mary could finally cope with the loss of her son, she could regain confidence in herself, build her self esteem, begin to leave the house more and meet her friends more. It would have meant getting her life back. I always take each and every client very seriously, I want to use Hypnotherapy to help people and I take responsibility each and every time I take a new client.

Well, after one week here is what she wrote: “Hello Luca Thank you for the email, I have waited to reply, I wanted to have a full week. I feel good, no eating between meals, and no sandwiches. I don't miss the bread at all, if my scales are right I have lost 4lbs. this week so I am very pleased”.

She has lost 4lbs per week since then. This is what makes my job so wonderful.

Be Hypnotised and Never Diet Again
Diet vs Hypnosis

hypnoMany of us are constantly thinkingof trying to lose a little weight and shape up for the new season ahead. However dieting can be a daunting task and can turn out in a disaster for many as they lose a little weight in the short term, only to put it straight back on again once they finish the diet (or even sooner).  Diets can work in the short term, then once the target weight has been reached, the dieter will begin to eat normally and the weight will go straight back on. It is a never ending battle.

So, what is the alternative? Hypnotherapy can help with weight loss by addressing the issue from a more mind related viewpoint.  Many people have reported a weight loss of up to 6 pounds per week using hypnosis, Neuro Linguistic Programming and Time Line Therapy.

How easy would it be if temptations are not temptations anymore? What if your stomach could feel full with less food? Hypnotherapy does just that; by reaching the unconscious mind, hypnosis can clear reasons for emotional eating such as stress, sadness, boredom etc. It then establishes alternative behaviours and resources which will cause a natural new approach to food in general and a complete new attitude and the weight stays off. Most people who undertook hypnotherapy to lose weight, reported improvements in other areas of their lives whilst losing weight.

So how does it really work? It’s simple really: when we see, hear, touch or even just think of something, that something creates a certain thought, image of feeling in our mind. This then produces a state of mind and consequently a sensation, mood and/or behaviour.

So if for example you are trying not to eat chocolate (which you like very much), you think that you don’t want to eat chocolate. It must be mentioned that the mind does not seem to be able to process negative statements and therefore when we think “I don’t want to think about chocolate” we are already thinking about chocolate in the first instance and this alone creates a focus on that thing we do not want to focus on.

When we think about chocolate, we make a certain representation of it; whether this is an image, a sensation or a feeling (this changes from person to person).

For this example, let’s say that when you think of chocolate you get an image in your mind, now that image, which is normally in vivid, bright colours, creates a certain thought and consequently a feeling or sensation which is normally making that piece of chocolate even more compelling. This is, in a nutshell, why it is so hard to resist that temptation and, after a struggling internal battle, you end up biting that piece of chocolate with intense emotions, either passionate love or frustration and revenge.

For many people this can cause a vicious thinking pattern that creates guilt for having given in and therefore, now that we failed, we may as well eat the all block of chocolate. Sounds familiar?

Now stop and think: What would happen if chocolate would create a different set of images, emotions and feelings in our minds? What would happen if this representation would not be that appealing anymore? I guess that we would probably not be attracted to chocolate that much, would we?

This, added to letting go of any emotional issue which may have caused you to look for comfort in food and eat when your body didn’t really need it, generate a natural motivation to exercise and perhaps use the immense power of the unconscious mind to provide you with the sensation that your stomach shrank and that you therefore no longer can eat as much as before even if you wanted and you have found yourself a brand new behaviour, attitude and personality which will help you lose weight like no diet could ever do. And the best part is that all of this will feel ever so natural to you.

Happy dieting now ;-)

Headache? Try the “HypnoPill”
Can hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) take your headache away? Can they take your back pain away? Can they make your stomach cramps disappear? Can they really?

I was in Cambridge town centre only a few days ago. I went out with one of my dearest friends who is also a hypnotherapist in Cambridge.

As we stood just outside a popular bar, we bumped into a girl I knew which we will call Mary (not her real name) and began the usual “hi, long time no see” kind of conversation.

Mary soon introduced us to her friend Barbara (again, not her real name) who in between “nice to meet you” and “how’s your evening so far” mentioned that she had a terrible headache.

My friend Joseph asked her: “Where is your headache?” and she pointed it to her forehead, then Joe continued “What colour is it?” a question which made Barbara rather confused.

As she goes to answer, Joe was interrupted by Mary, who obviously could no longer follow this unusual conversation and could not see where this was going.

I then moved my attention to Barbara, who was probably still a little mesmerised, and continued the “therapeutic” work started by Joe. I began from showing the good intention to take Barbara’s confusion away and make some sense of the rather unusual questioning as well as “installing” some expectations.

It was something along these lines:

Me- handing my business card: “Relax Barbara, we are hypnotherapist here in Cambridge. So tell me... where did you say your headache was?”

Barbara: “I thought that hypnotherapy was weight loss, stop smoking, phobias and things like that?”

Me: “Well, let’s see...”

Barbara pointing at her forehead: “Right here, it goes all the way across”

Me - grabbing Barbara’s right arm by the wrist and moving it to her right with my left hand while gently running my right hand index finger across her forehead: “It was right here you said, was it?”

Barbara - looking even more confused now: “Yes, right there”

Me: “So... before we let go now, what colour is it?”

Barbara: “What?

Me: “Colour; let go and trust the first that comes up, what colour was it?”

Barbara - looking spaced: “Pink, it’s pink”

Me - clicking my right hand fingers and gently touching the middle of her forehead with my left index finger: “Gone, it’s gone...”

and before I could continue to finish this “session” she opens her eyes widely and begins almost screaming:

“It’s gone!! It’s gone!! Mary, Mary!!! My headache is gone... you guys are weird! Who are you?!! It’s gone! I had it for 3 day, 3 days and now it’s totally gone!!”

As Hypnotherapists, in therapy room we always follow our code of practice and do anything to make the greatest positive changes in people, we have a big love for helping people.

Equally, it is important to respect the “code of good fun” in social environments and take some satisfaction in just looking cool and a little mysterious; for this reason, we politely said bye and left the two girls with many questions and not many answers.

Having kept my business card, Barbara texted me the next day telling me that her headache went and never came back.

Now, let’s look at this “headache Hypnopill” from a sceptic angle; was there any magic in what we did? No!

Was there a specific technique in what with did? Again no.
Was the colour of Barbara’s headache important for the success of the technique? In no way as there was no technique.

Was there a special healing energy in my finger, touch or words? No of course.
Was there a special energy in the whole thing? Absolutely, a great positive energy.

Was Barbara’s headache really pink? It was for her.

So how can this have worked without special healing powers or techniques? Was Barbara pretending that her headache was gone?

Barbara was not pretending, the headache was really gone.

We are hypnotists and N Language exPerts, people who use language to help people’s minds and that is what we have done. My hypnotherapy clinic in Cambridge is my passion as it allows me to help people as part of my occupation.

Of course there is no such thing as a pink headache, there was however a pink headache for Barbara, for others it may have been green, black, red, or with no colour.

Was Barbara’s headache psychosomatic? I don’t personally think so but truth is that we don’t know.

Was it caused by stress? Maybe but again we do not know.

The only thing that we know for sure and that really matters is that the headache has disappeared. Barbara felt better, her evening was more enjoyable and so was the day after and probably the whole week.

Here is the real question for you now, if you will...
Barbara’s headache was gone and that’s really it, what else could be important when you had a headache that you no longer have?

Do You Have a Goal?
Learn how to make it come to you

I guess you have a goal; something you want to be, have or do. We all have that something that we would like to be, to have or to do but most of the time those goals seem too big; thoughts like “there is no way I can get this...”, “I wish I could...”, "I am not good enough" or “if only I could...” seem to occupy our minds and govern the way we behave and consequently limit our potential. So we make ourselves “happy” and accept that those goals are simply too big.

We only dream of achieving them.  Often we tend to believe we cannot actually get those things we really want and therefore we don’t take any action. We just sit there dreaming and blaming life while commiserating ourselves. We tell ourselves things like: "The rich and successful are either lucky or one of a kind", "Those with fit and good looking bodies are the only ones with time to exercise" etc.

Well, now is time to think again. We can get anything we want if we just want it badly enough; although this may seem controversial at first, stick with me and it will all make sense to you sooner than you think, okay?

Some people call it the Law of Attraction, some people call it positive thinking and many others came up with many different names for it. I like the concept of the Law of Attraction but we will call it Positive Thinking here so that nobody will be chasing us with law suits for stealing the name.

There are many books talking about the Law of Attraction in detail, however in essence it states that if we desire something strongly and follow specific techniques, we can influence the universe to cause events that will make our goals almost magically manifest themselves; “CRAZY!!!” I hear you say. Well maybe, but I wonder what it would be like for you if this was not so crazy, I wonder what difference it would make to you, I wonder what it would mean to you if this was not so “CRAZY!!!” and was actually all true?

What would it mean to you? Take a moment to really think about this... What would it be like for you if this was really true?

The way I see and live Positive Thinking is, in very simple terms, creating a goal with a very structured and precise methodology and then follow a specific way of thinking which will enable you to have the ideal attitude, mindset, energy and take the appropriate inspired actions which will facilitate the achievement of that goal.  Here below you will see the Goal Setting structure and after that you will see how to use your thinking so to influence the Universe to cause these goals to “come” to us.

Goal Setting's Structure

Stated in the positive
A well formed goal must be stated in the positive. This means moving toward something, not away from something, have something you want as opposed to not having something you don’t want, to be the person that you want to be and not to not be the person you do not want to be. An example of a goal stated in the positive is “I am with Mr Right Now and I am happy” and not “I am not alone anymore...”

Measurable
When will you know you got it? If you state that you want more money, when will you know when you achieve “more”? Your goal must be measurable and to be measurable it must be a specific goal.

If it is money that you want then stating that you want more money would not be good enough as this way you may get more money but how much? £5 is more money but would you be satisfied with that?

If you want to lose weight then how much weight do you want to lose? Or how much do you want to weigh?

“I now have £124,000.00 in my bank account” is stated in positive and measurable as you will know that you have your goal when your bank account reads £124,000.00CR, "I am now on the scales which read XX stone and XX lbs" is stated in the positive and is measurable.

However this is still NOT enough. You need a date. You need to know when you want it by or else you may still get it but you may get it when you are 99 years of age and, in this case, I am sure you would agree that this may not be so useful , would you not?

Have you ever heard people saying things like: “I will do it next month”, “I will do it later”, “I will get it soon”. “It is now the 20th April 2010 and I now have £124,000.00 in my bank account” or "it is now the 20th April 2010 and standing on the scales I read XX stone and XX pounds" are examples of goals stated in the positive and measurable.

Realistic
This is an important point; the goal must be realistic and yet ambitious. For example if you stated that you want to go to the Moon by April 2010 and you don’t have any form of knowledge or experience in the subject you may achieve this goal however, the chances that you will actually do it are slim. This is because there are factors that not even the universe can control within that time length. You need the adequate level of fitness, training, knowledge, background etc. This is different if you are somehow already involved in the astronautic environment.

That said, you must think big! Have big ambitions. If you have no money at all now and your goal is that of having £1 million by April 2010, you could achieve it as there is no logical barrier which cannot be influenced by the right attitude, energy and efforts. For example, a few year ago, I wanted to raise £4,000.00 to buy a new car, I had some money but I was £4,000.00 short. I simply did not know how to get this money until a movie I was watching gave me an idea. I was an expert in sales psychology and, although at the time neither Italy nor the UK was geared to be interested in the subject, I have wrote a manual and sold it on-line to the US market. It took 8 months but I did raise £4,200.00 by selling the manual at £70.00.

If I told you that Luke moved to a new country where the language spoken was completely and utterly unknown to him and so was the culture and national law and that after only 3 years he had 3 successful businesses, a house located in the centre of town, mastered the language and began teaching his subject of interest to people native of that nation you would not probably believe it. Would you?

Or that for more than 5 years Mary was not able to lose weight and then, after taking responsibility and setting her goals began losing 3-6 pounds per week you would find it hard to believe, right?

Look at TV shows like The X Factor and American Idol. The contestant who wins becomes a star, rich and famous in only a few weeks. So think big but perhaps if you haven’t even seen a space shuttle before, leave the Moon alone.

Timely
See Measurable/have a date.

This is the basic structure of a goal which is used by most knowledgeable business people. However, in order to make it more favourable, it is important to apply the following steps:

Write your goals down, always!

Your goal must be self initiated and self maintained by you.
Be "selfish"! This goal must benefit you directly before it benefits any other individual. If your goal will benefit other people, that’s great, however you must create this goal for you, it must benefit you directly first.

What prevents you from achieving that goal now
If your goal is that of publishing a book, you may find that what prevents you may be not having any idea on what to write, not having written a single word of the book, not knowing any publisher, not having the money etc. This alone will give you many answers and directions. You may be very pleasantly surprised by what you may find. This will make you realise whether you need help or can do it alone.

If you want to lose weight, this may make you realise that you find it hard to cope with the cravings, emotional eating, portion sizes or whatever else. At this point you will have a clear idea of what your barrier is and can seek the most appropriate form of help.

What will happen if you achieve your goal?
What will change in your life, your circle of friends and family? Be specific as this process will help you realise whether you are happy with the changes that will occur and whether you really want those changes to happen.

What will not happen if you achieve it?
And the way I see this is that you should write both positive and negative things. For example, if your goal was to become a famous rock star, one of the answers to this question may be that you will have more money, you will not have to work in that shop anymore, you will not have to struggle to find the time to play, you will not have the privacy you now have anymore, you will not see your current friends and family as often anymore etc.

What will happen if you don’t achieve it?
In the rock star example above the answer could be that you will have gained an experience in trying to achieve it, you will have the knowledge of what is involved to become a famous rock star, you may have to find another job, you will have learned something new etc..

What will not happen if you don’t achieve it?
You will not have to move to the US, you will not have to hide from paparazzi, you will not be able to play the guitar all that much etc.
This is the basic structure of a goal; soon we will look at taking the necessary steps to achieve it.
Can you act as if you have it now?
Can you pretend that you have it now? Pretend that you have your goal now, take charge of your thoughts by knowing that you already have it; because you do really, it's on its way.

What actually happens when you think and behave as if you have that goal already is that you begin to use your mind in a way which will enable you to have the ideas, attitude, confidence and behaviour which will facilitate the process of achieving that goal.

Where are You now?
The power of focus and how to use it to get to your goal now.

It is imperative that we know where we want to go but I am sure you would agree that it is just as important to know you where we are now.

This will enable us to calibrate and measure our progress. As when stating your goal it is important to be specific, it is just as important when analysing where you are now. As in the Goal Settings, this must be stated in the positive; this is called Gratitude.

Gratitude helps you receive more of what you have; in fact, all thoughts are really requests for more of the same, in good and in bad. Gratitute is very powerful owever you need to ensure that you a grateful for what you do have focus on what you want. You need to forget about the things that you do not want, do not try not to think about them, simple think about something else. If you try not to think about what you do not want, you will end up thinking about it more and therefore attracting more of it.

This is mainly because of the fact that our brain is not able to process negatives; here is an example: Try really, really hard not to think of a pink house, don’t think of a pink house. Now, what are you thinking about?  Don’t say a pink house! ;-)

In order for our brain to keep from thinking about something, it needs to think about it first, then decide or remember that it does not want to think about it and either change one or more elements of that something or think  about something else instead. So, what does this say? Well, I wonder what a person who keeps on thinking “I don’t want to fail, I don’t want to stay where I am” focuses on. I wonder what requests he/she is sending out; and what do you think this person is likely to receive?

The key here is to think in positive and be grateful for what we do have.
I would suggest you take 10 minutes every night or morning to write all the things you are grateful for, meaning it. Begin from the things that we give more for granted; after all, not everybody has the privilege of waking up in the morning feeling healthy, warm and with food on the table. So be grateful for those things too; don’t leave anything out.

Once you have a good list of the things that you do have, for which you are grateful, then take that image, thought or feeling of what you want to be, have or do and notice the difference. What skills does the “new you” have that you do not have now? What resources? Once you have the list of those skills, you will notice that some of these skills are simply behavioural and attitudinal. This means that the “new you” has acquired a different way of thinking, behaving and has consequently acquired a different physiology.

It helps to take charge of those things now. You may not have the final outcome yet, nothing however stops you from thinking, behaving and appearing like that “new you” right now; you can easily act as if you are that “new you” now. You could easily imagine what it would feel like being that “new you”, and you can feel those feelings now.

This will amplify that focus on that goal you have, because when you act as if you have it, you are acting as if you have it, behaving as if you have it, appearing as if you have it and thinking as if you have it.

Do you see what this does? You are focusing entirely on your goal; your thoughts are focused on it, your body is focused on it, your language is focused on it and your behaviour is focused on it. Your thoughts and energy are congruent with what you want.

Now, what is the most important skill in achieving something? That’s right, it’s the FOCUS. And there is no better way to focus than this; as this way, without consciously realising it, you are focusing on your goal all day, every day, mind and body.

To your success!

It's Your Choice
Take responsibility and claim the power you know you have

If you have a goal in mind, something that you want to be, have or do but for some reason you do not seem to be able to get it, it is clear that there is something preventing you from getting that goal. If this is the case, it is now time to look at the things that prevent you from achieving that goal. It is now time to begin the “change work”, time to lose that excess weight, let go of that fear, bad habit, negative emotion, anxiety, or whatever the problem may be.

Now it is time to gain that confidence, time to know that you deserve to achieve that goal you have, time to gain that self esteem. It is now time to take responsibility and be at cause.

Before we start the “change work” let’s look at who or what is preventing you from achieving your desired outcome. Who or what caused you to have the problem which holds you back? Who or what “gave” it to you? Who or what is responsible for this “change work” you are now having to do? Is it your parents? Is it your boss? Perhaps your colleagues? Partner? Friends? Who? What?

How about... You?

That’s right; in order to make any change and achieve our goals we must take full responsibility for having the problem in the first place. We have chosen to have that issue! We have, consciously or unconsciously, made that decision. If a person is prevented from achieving his or her goal, he or she is engaged in a behaviour that is holding him or her back.

I know that this may seem controversial and insane at first, but stick with me at it will all make sense soon. Let’s say that Mary’s goal is that of being promoted at work and becoming the chief executive by the end of the year and that her lack of concentration, stamina and focus, which represent the barrier preventing her from getting there, is caused by interrupted sleep. Now, who is keeping Mary from sleeping? Is there anyone waking her up during the night? Is there a nasty person whose time is occupied by waking Mary up every so often? Chances are that there is nobody waking Mary up. Mary IS waking herself up. She is doing it, no one else is! At some point, for some reasons, Mary made the decision, perhaps unconsciously, that it is good (or necessary) to wake up during the night and then this became a habit.

Mary (not her real name by the way) was one of my clients and it only took us 45 minutes to let go of her problem and so enabling Mary to sleep uninterruptedly.
This however happened only after Mary was able to take responsibility and accept that, even if out of her conscious control, she had at some point decided to have the problem.

If Ralph’s goal is that of travelling the world and seeing 10 countries by August 2010 and his fear of flying is the factor holding him back from doing so, who is being unwarrantedly fearful? Is there anyone giving Ralph the panic attacks, the shaking, the sweating and all the other symptoms? No, there is not; Ralph is behaving is such way because he decided to do so. At some point, for some reason, Ralph decided to have that fear.

With this I am not saying that victims of violence, victims of natural calamities, victims of accidents and all people involved in unfortunate events have chosen to attract these events. Not at all! A victim of an assault who is now traumatised and cannot leave his or her house for the fear of another assault, did not decide to attract the assaulter, however he or she did decide to never again go out of the house. He or she made that decision not to leave the house. A victim of a road accident was involved in the accident without deciding that, however if he or she decides not to drive again, he or she is responsible for the consequences of this decision.

This can happen for a number of reasons. More often than not, this happens because the unconscious mind is trying to protect us or to achieve a certain goal by adopting that behaviour. The unconscious mind is infinitely more powerful than the conscious mind, however, it needs to be guided; we need to learn how to communicate with our unconscious so that it knows what we really want and it can understand that the current behaviour is stopping us from getting there. Your unconscious mind loves to please you, this is its goal and therefore it will do it easily and with pleasure, if you just ask.

In a nutshell, see the unconscious mind as a child who is infinitely more powerful that any grown man alive. That child is really strong but he does not know how to use that strength unless we tell him how.
Not taking responsibility would mean that we give up on the power we have to change. Taking responsibility means that as we have decided to have the problem, we can now decide to let go of it.

The fact that this behaviour/problem is out of our conscious control means that it comes from the unconscious, and that’s fine because it is the unconscious that you will be working with.

What do you think would happen if the victim of the assault decides to leave the house and be comfortable? What would happen if the victim of the car accident decides to drive again and actually enjoy it? What would happen if they could make these decisions with determination and generate new healthy behaviours easily, just by deciding to do so?

What would happen is that the issue will disappear. As simple as that! If we could make that firm decision to command our unconscious mind to generate new, alternative representations, thoughts, feelings and behaviours, the issue would simply disappear.

So, I am sure that by now you know that in order to make that change, we need to take full responsibility for the behaviour which, although may seem out of our control, we have decided to have, and you need to do that right now if you haven’t already done so.  Be at cause, at cause of the events that you experience, at cause of the reactions that you choose to have over what “happens” to you. By being at cause you cannot be an effect of the events you encounter, an effect of life. By being at cause, you choose to make of life a product you like, you refuse to be the product of life. How do you do that?

Very simple, simply say to yourself that you have caused yourself to have this issue and now you have decided to let go of it. You have now decided to engage in that new behaviour, state of mind, feelings, thoughts and life style. Just state this as a true statement, as true as the fact that the sun comes up every morning and goes down every night (whether you see it or not). Believe it!

Once you have done that you will soon come to realise whether you need more resources or not. You will soon come to understand whether you can change by yourself or need help. Either way you are progressing; if you need help then you will find the help you need because now you take responsibility and therefore you have the power to change and if this involves changing with the help of a professional so be it!

Now YOU are in charge, fully in charge of making that change and live the life you know you deserve to live.

To your success.

Chunking Your Issues!
What's wrong?

“Chunking Up” means referring to a larger category of which the subject in discussion is part of. For example, cars are an example of vehicles; vehicles are an example of transportation.  Bananas are example or fruit and fruit is an example of vegetarian foods which are an example of food and food is an example of comestible products.  What is the purpose of this, what could “Chunking Up” be useful for? Well, it is a great way to establish the basis for change and is a great tool which can be used to reach agreement in difficult situations.

For example, you may or may not like bananas; and if you do not like bananas we may disagree that bananas taste good. However, it is less likely that we would disagree when talking about fruit in general, even less likely that we disagree when we talk about vegetarian food and it is almost impossible not to agree that food is good when we talk about food in general. “Chunking Down” is the exact opposite.

Okay, what is the purpose of this in real life? Well, have you ever heard a friend saying things like: “Nothing goes right! Everything sucks!” or “Nothing ever goes my way!” etc. Applying the right “chunking techniques” when dealing with these kinds of moods can have a “miraculous” positive effect on the person who is complaining.

For example, a while ago, I was enjoying a peaceful Sunday afternoon in my garden, entertained by a great sunshine, a few friends around and a cool beer in my hand.

Just as I took the first sip of that cool beer my phone rang and the screen read the name of a friend of mine which we will call Andrew (not his real name). Right away I thought that this could have been an invite to a bbq or a request to come over to mine and enjoy the wonderful day with friends.

To destroy this fantastic expectation of mine, I found a rather unpleasantly toned voice saying something along these lines:

A:“Everything is c**p!! I don’t understand how these things always happen to me!”  so I say “hohoho, slow your horses down Andrew! What’s wrong?”
To which the answer was “EVERYTHING! Everything just sucks!”

At this point I could have said something like “well, come on, everything will be alright, you know...” but this would have probably made it even worse. Why? Well, by saying “Everything will be alright soon” I would have implicitly agreed (presupposition) that EVERYTHING was wrong in the first place.

This would have meant “I know, you are right, EVERYTHING is c**p, but it will not be crap all the time; or will it?” Using the chunking process appropriately you can really make the difference in someone’s mood and therefore improving their day as well as preserving the well deserved happiness and tranquillity of your own. Here’s how I did it that time.

I said: “EVERYTHING??????” sounding incredibly surprised. That’s it, that’s what made that massive difference in his day as well as mine and my family’s day.

By acting so surprised and asking the question, I made Andrew think and then I continued “What specifically is crap?” and he said “Well, I went to work and...” so I chipped in and said “ho I see... so it’s a work thing isn’t it?” to which Andrew said “Yes, yes it’s a work thing, you see I went there and the computer crashed and lost all...” me, chipping in again “I see... the computer eh?” “Yes.

Yes the computer. It just crashed on me as I was literally finished with that 5000 word project I was working on and now I lost it all!. Now I will have to redo the whole conclusion of the presentation which means that I will have to work at least 10 extra hours next week!” Me: “Oh no!! What a shame!!! Wow, it’s a good thing that you saved the rest of the presentation, or else you would have had to work 100 extra hours, but that’s saved isn’t it?” “Yes it is”, Me: “Great, so, that knowledge you now have to save a project every 300 words will help you in the future, will it not? I wonder whether you would like to come for a cold beer at my place and let go of work until Monday? Would you like to come for a beer or shall with put a bbq together?”

So we began by having a situation where EVERYTHING was wrong. In his mind, really EVERYTHING was wrong. From EVERYTHING, we went down to WORK being the wrong bit, from there we took Andrew to isolate the wrong part of everything to the computer, then down to 10 extra hours work. Now, would you agree that there is a massive difference between EVERYTHING and an extra 10 hours work? I though you would.

Start right now; first make a list of your problems as they appear now and then chunk down or up as appropriate.

The Platform of Life
Why you cannot possibly make mistakes

Take yourself lightly because that’s how you want to be taken. Let me explain; if you know the “secret”, you cannot possibly make mistakes! How would you feel if, no matter what decision you make, you would not be able to make mistakes?

How would you feel if, no matter what happens so you, you would be winning?

For several reasons, we have been programmed to see the worst case scenario in most things; if, for example, you find yourself in a position where, due to someone offering you a new job, you have to decide whether to stay where you are or whether to accept the offer; thoughts like “What if I leave and then I am not able to give them what they want and get fired?” “What if I say No and then get bored here?” “What ifs” of this kind can be in our minds in many situations, often, when making a decision, the outcome in our mind looks like a “lose-lose” situation and thus we cannot decide.
platform of life

The truth, the “secret” is that life has good surprises for you in both options. If, like in the example above, you have to decide whether to take a new challenge or stay in your present job, chances are that you would be winning no matter what you decide. Let’s say that you do take the new job; the following may happen:

  • You meet new people
  • You learn new things
  • You get excited
  • You find it difficult and challenge yourself, thus you grow
  • You cannot cope and decide to leave and so have to find a new job which will “force” you to work hard at selling yourself and thus you grow
  • You get fired and cannot find a job for sometime which means running out of money. This would elicit your ability to cope with such situation, teach you to manage finances meticulously, having to telephone creditors and tell them that they will get paid, just not now. This will put enough pressure on your shoulders so that you can find that job and eventually, as you know now, things will work out amazingly and, due to the challenges you have just overcome, you grow.
  • Once you solve the situation you would have learnt many things and gained many skills; persistence, confidence, appreciation and much more. Simon Cowell was down to his last £5.00 just before he “made it”. Stallone had to sell his dog just before someone trusted his project with Rocky. I personally came to the UK with £65 in my pockets and the first week’s rent was £95.

Once you learn the “secret”, once you realise that whatever happens is going to be a blessing, all your fears will simply disappear. Think about it for a moment, what would it be like to be excited about all decisions you make; what would it be like to be able to make your decisions based on what is the most exciting option as opposed to the less scary option? Everything that you do will bring you growth, including making “mistakes” for if you are not making “mistakes”, it must mean that you are not doing anything, you are not growing.

Once your mind is fully engaged in the line of thinking above, you will move from a place of fear and insecurities to a place of power and opportunities. Ask yourself, “What is the worst that can happen?” and ask yourself the same question with each answer that you give yourself you will soon come to realise that the “worst” that can happen is an opportunity to grow.

platform 2
Life is like flying an aircraft; it is all about correcting the direction heading toward your goal. If you were not making “mistakes” it would most likely mean that you are making “mistakes” but fail to realise it. This could mean that you are “off track” and could stay so and thus, never get to your destination.

platform 3

Taking chances means that you “push yourself” to grow constantly and this means that from time to time you will find a path that is not the most ideal to get to where you want go and so correct it. During the correction process however, you would grow, get stronger and learn new skills which means that your speed toward your goal would increase and so would your strengths. The journey of growth toward your goals looks like this:
platform 4
Another important element is how you “fill” your “life’s platform”. Have you ever met someone who says things like “I would be lost if he left me”, “if my career does not work out I would be ruined”, “it’s everything I have” etc? This is possibly one of the most undesirable situations one can put him/herself in. This happens because that person “lives” for his/her partner, career, children etc. Let’s say that this person “lives” for the relationship; his/her life looks like this:

platform 5
This is often the cause of many uncomfortable reactions and behaviours such as obsession, jealousy, paranoia etc. Also, if the relationship was to end, the person “living” for that relationship would have nothing to live for and his/her life would become misery, depression and sadness; emptiness!

platform 6

It is important to fill your life with several things, be interested in several areas and this will not only enable you to experience each area with a more productive, educational and pleasant attitude, but also allow you to know that, should one of the areas be in a transition period, your life would still be filled with all the other areas which would keep you “alive”.

This below is my personal Platform of Life.

platform 7

As you can see, even if one of the boxes was in such “stuck state” to be temporarily removed, my life would still be filled with things to do, people to see, tasks to complete, goals to achieve; I would look after my health, have fun and still “have a life”.

I strongly recommend that you draw your Platform of Life with several boxes and then for each box, create a to-do list and a list of commitments. By commitments I mean that you must commit to all the boxes, including the fun box, the health box, the family box and so on. This will allow you to “train your mind”, meet new people, stay healthy and fit, be productive and ultimately have a happier life. On my Platform of Life above, Contributions stands for work I do for the community, charity work, work to help the planet and others.

Start now by drawing your Platform of Life and committing yourself to complete a to-do list once you get home and start living according to it from today.

Positive Thinking What?!
Is positive thinking or just telling yourself things you don't believe in?

Once you have taken full responsibility for whatever used to hold you back in life, your unconscious mind will help you move toward your goals as you can begin to consciously make massive and positive changes as, by taking responsibility, you have regained the power to change. There are however elements which you need to learn to manage and the most important and powerful is your mind; your thoughts.

You need to understand that whatever goes on in your mind goes on in your life. Often, we engage in limiting beliefs and  negative thoughts which hold us back; thoughts like “I am not good enough”, “I have no time”, “They don’t understand me” and the list goes on. The first thing to do in order to change what goes on in your life is to change what goes on in your mind. Think positive!

You can influence the universe to cause events that will give you what you want. Positive thinking and gratitude help you receive more of what you have. In fact, all thoughts are really requests for more of the same, in good and in bad.  This is mainly because of the fact that our mind is not able to process negatives. Here is an example: Try really, really hard not to think of a pink house, don’t think of a pink house. Now, what are you thinking about?  Don’s say a pink house! ;-)

In order for our mind to keep from thinking about something, it needs to think about it first, then decide or remember that it does not want to think about it and either change one or more elements of that something or think  about something else instead. So, what does this say? Well, I wonder what a person who keeps on thinking “I don’t want to fail, I don’t want to stay where I am. I don’t want to feel that way anymore...” focuses on. I wonder what requests he/she is sending out; and what do you think this person is likely to receive?

Thinking positive thoughts
means stating what you want as if you have it now. With this I am not suggesting that you need to lie to yourself by saying things that you do not believe in. Let’s say that your goal is that of be making £10,000.00 per month; in this case a positive variation could be “I am taking the necessary actions to be making £10,000.00 per month starting on PRECISE DATE – See “Goal Setting”. Or let’s say that your goal is that of weighing 10 stone; in this case a positive variation could be “I am doing everything brilliantly to be at 11 stone by PRECISE DATE – see “Goal Setting”.

When you catch negative thoughts, change them right away to the positive versions. Here below you can see a brief diagram showing how to change negative thoughts into positive ones.

positive-thinking

This will take practice; negative thoughts will try to come in from all angles and the secret is to persist and reframe each and every thought that is not positive and this will eventually become an automatic habit.

Another tool is positive affirmations;
start now! Write 5 statements that support what you want to be, have or do. Write statements which remind you of how empowered you are, things which inspire you to take action, things which will fill your mind with inspiration, excitement, enthusiasm and positive thoughts.

Starting today, write positive affirmations on Post-It and place them where you are likely to see them often. Be creative! You can print your most powerful affirmations, frame them and hang them on your walls, you can put them in your wallet, etc.

Every day, take at least three five minute breaks and read these affirmations, possibly out loud in front of a mirror.

Gratitude
is another great tool which will enable you to use your mind to reach your goals; the key here is to be grateful for what we do have.

Once you have a good list of the things that you do have, for which you are grateful, take that image of what you want to be, have or do, that “You” with that final outcome and notice the difference between that “New You” and You now. What skills does the “New You” have that you do not have now? What resources? Once you have that list of those skills and resources, you will notice that some of these skills are simply behavioural and attitudinal. This means that the “New You” has acquired a different way of thinking, behaving and consequently a different physiology. The others may be skills and things that you need to learn.

It helps to take charge of those things now. You may not have the final outcome yet, nothing however stops you from thinking, behaving and appearing like that “New You” right now; you can easily act as if you are that “New You” now. You could easily imagine what it would feel like being that “New You”, and you can feel those feelings now.

This will amplify your focus on that goal you have, because when you act as if you have it now, you are acting as if you have it, behaving as if you have it, appearing as if you have it and thinking as if you have it.

Do you see what this does? You are focusing entirely on your goal; your thoughts are focused on it, your body is focused on it, your language is focused on it and your behaviour is focused on it.

Now, what is the most important skill in achieving something? That’s right, it’s the FOCUS. And there is no better way to focus than this as this way, without consciously realising it, you are focusing on your goal all day, every day, mind and body.

How to put your goals into your future...
Let's take a journey together

That’s right; make it happen by “programming” your future. Okay, for this we must play a game so that you really get the sense of this right now.

So, if I was to ask you to show me in which direction your time travels, I have the impression that you may say that it goes from back to front, left to right, down to up or any other direction. It may go through you, above you, in front of you, behind you or beside you; right? “WHAAT???!!!” I hear some of you say. It is actually very easy, think of your past right now; think of last Christmas. Good, you will notice that the memory of last Christmas comes from somewhere, behind you, from your left or from another direction. Now, think of your future, if you were to point your finger toward your future where would you point?

If you are like most people, your time probably runs from your past to your future forming a line. If not, than relax, nothing to worry about, just imagine a long line in front of you and one behind you and use the front one as the line of your future and the one behind you as the one representing your past.

Now, in order to play this game, you need to make yourself comfortable and I suggest that you record yourself reading the next few lines and then plug the headphones in and take a trip with me right now... would you?

So I assume that you know where your past is and where your future is. In a moment, I am going to ask you to take a deep breath in through the nose; not yet though. First, I want you to imagine that as you breathe in you are breathing in a calming, relaxing feeling which fills up your whole body with tranquillity and relaxation. Then as you breathe out, push out any tension from your body, any tension from your muscles, feel each and every muscle relaxing as you breathe out.

So go ahead now and take a deep, deep breath in through the nose and feel that calming feeling filling your body with relaxation.  And now as you exhale feel your body relaxing from the top of your head all the way down to the tips of your toes. Good!

Now come with me, we’ll take a journey together. Take another deep breath in and as you breathe out think of that goal you have; imagine seeing a clear picture of you having achieved that outcome. Imagine seeing yourself in that picture having that goal now. Now imagine stepping into thebody of that “New You” so that you see the things you would see as you have achieved that goal, imagine hearing the things you would hear and imagine those feelings of having achieved that goal right now; feel those wonderful feelings now. Now step out of that picture so that you see yourself in the picture.

Make the colours of that picture bright, but not too bright, the sounds loud and clear but not too loud, just right you know, so that the picture looks the most real to you.
Once you have it, imagine holding that picture in your hands, with a nice frame around it. Now take another deep breath in and as you breathe out just float all the way up in the air, that’s right, float all the way up in the air above your time line, all the way up in the air, high, high, high up in the air.

You may be able to imagine seeing your time line below you or you may feel the sensation of floating up, or perhaps it may just be an awareness which tells you that your are floating up in the air.

Now float all the way into your future, right above the moment on which you have prefixed yourself to have that goal, right above that moment. As you get there, holding that picture in your hands, stop once you get there and stay up in the air still holding that picture. Great job! You are doing great.

Now, in a moment I will ask you to take three deep breaths, not now but in a moment; and as you exhale each time I want you to blow that positive energy into that picture, that’s right, blow into that picture and as you do feel that picture absorbing energy and becoming strangely warmer and heavier, warmer and heavier. So go ahead now and take the first deep breath and as you exhale feel that picture absorbing that positive energy and becoming warmer and heavier; good.

And the second breath now, even deeper than the first, but not as deep as the next to come. And as you blow into that picture feel it becoming hot and heavy, hot and heavy; great.

And now the last breath, the deepest one of all, in through the nose and... let it out feeling that picture burning hot and as heavy as a massive rock, that’s right, as heavy as a massive rock now.

Now let go of that picture, let it gently float down into your time line, right into the moment in your future when you want that goal. Let it float down and watch it as it gently places itself into your time line, into your future.

Excellent, you are really doing great. Now, with your super energised picture right into your future, turn around facing toward now and notice how all the events from that moment back to now begin to re-evaluate themselves, they begin to rearrange themselves and change now so to support the achievement of that goal.

Now, slowly float back to now and as you do notice your time line becoming brighter and brighter, notice how the events between your future and now fully support the accomplishment of your goal and you may also notice something rather revealing on your way back; maybe a new learning, maybe many new teachings, it really doesn’t matter as your goal is now in your future and your subconscious mind can provide you with the right directions and answers so that you get your goal right when you know you will. And when you are ready, come back to now and float back into your body and ask yourself: Now, how do I feel about that goal? Will you get it now?

Follow these simple steps and your chances to get what you want will increase massively.

What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis: Inside and Out

This is the £1,000,000.00 question.

My favourite definition is: “Hypnosis is an altered state of mind in which you allow yourself to enter”.

Hypnosis is often used in place of harmful prescription medication to treat a wide variety of ailments. But what is hypnosis used to treat? The practice of hypnosis is called “hypnotherapy”, and is used either as a solitary treatment or in conjunction with other treatments.

Hypnotherapy is practiced by a trained licensed professional hypnotherapist.
Hypnosis is often used to treat the symptoms associated with emotional, behavioural, habitual, social, and medical issues.

Hypnosis can help people deal with:

• Labour and childbirth
• Post-op surgery bleeding and pain
• Dental treatment recovery
• Migraine headaches
• Chemotherapy nausea/vomiting
• Weak immune systems
• High blood pressure
• Skin diseases
• Asthma
• Weight loss
• Quit smoking
• Addictions
• Public speaking
• Confidence
• Dyslexia
• Relationship
• Paranoia
• Sleeping disorders
• Depression
• Anxiety disorders, stress
• Atopic and psoriasis dermatitis
• Phobias

and more

A Brief History of Hypnosis
In one form or another, hypnosis has existed since the beginning of time. For
example, animals that hibernate are practicing one type of hypnosis. They are
practicing self-hypnosis by closing down their bodies while allowing their mind
and physical being to renew.

Prior to the 1400’s, when a person was sick it was thought to be intentionally
caused by the gods as punishment to mortal man. The healers of the time would have rituals that involved an altered state of mind, either in the sick person or the healer.

Every ritual was different, but they typically involved natural remedies from the rainforest, fire, music and chanting. A common thread in these treatments is that the ill person would be trying to reach a mental place where the mind would take over the body. This would begin the process of body healing.

By believing they were being healed, the power of the mind was unleashed.
There was mention in written documentation of hypnosis as early as the 3rd
century in Egypt.

The 18th century was a popular time for hypnosis, when Franz Anton Mesmer, an Austrian doctor, found he was capable of healing people of illnesses without surgery or medicine. His studies led him to believe that the body was regulated by a magnetic force, and the use of magnets and hypnosis healed people.

This type of hypnosis was called “Mesmerism”, and was very successful.

Hypnosis: What Is It?
People tend to either fully believe in hypnosis – or they do not. Rightfully, before you can claim to not believe in hypnosis, you need to fully understand what it is, and what it is not.

There is a lot of misinformation out there on the topic of hypnosis. People think
that they have to give up all control of themselves when being hypnotized. That is not true. You retain complete control of yourself.

Hypnosis is a normal, natural state of mind that is achieved by many in everyday activities. For example, remember the last time you were engaged in a good book?

That relaxed, focused mind-body connection is similar to hypnosis. Add a
trained, professional guide that offers suggestions, and you have a snapshot of a hypnosis session.

When you are hypnotized, your mind is still in control. You remain in the hypnotized state because you want to be there. The power of your mind is being used in hypnotherapy, facilitated by the guide.

A seasoned professional can lead the trance a specific way, which is helpful when trying to pinpoint a specific problem.
